Description
I’m guessing it was 1974. I worked at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. I worked in the maintenance department which meant I was sweeping floors, picking up trash, mopping up spills, and, yes, even spreading kitty litter onto vomit during events that had audience members who might get, well, inebriated. It was not a glamorous job at all. But I loved it. I loved it because it put me up close to some of the recording artists that defined that time in my life. One of those artists was the brilliant composer Carly Simon. It was during a James Taylor concert. I was standing off stage watching him when I realized I was standing next to Carly Simon. David Letterman used to call those moments “brushes with greatness.” Here is the entire conversation that I engaged in while being completely starstruck: Me: “Are you going to sing with him?” Carly: “No. I don’t think so.” That was it. But (and here is the best part) she looked me in the eye and SHE SMILED! By the way, she did sing with James.
