Description
Our 29th plein air paintings were done on April 28, 2012, at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. Hu, my dog, came along with Robin and me. It was a beautiful day and we had a great spot to paint underneath a covered picnic table. The shade was definitely welcome. We had a bit of gusty wind that presented some problems with the easels moving but we completed our two paintings and had a great day. There were two other painters at the park. Two ladies who were painting in water colors. The history of the park goes back to 1886 when a U.S. Life Saving Service House of Refuge was established there. In 1942 the Army Air Corp. established an air warning site to monitor hostile submarine and air activity. The park's namesake, Gamble Rogers, was a well known folk singer and story teller who lost his life while trying to save a drowning swimmer in 1991. Gamble Rogers was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 1998.
