Description
For our 33rd set of Plein Air Paintings my partner, Robin MacBlane, and I went to northeast Florida and set up our easels on the bluffs of Big Talbot Island State Park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The shoreline has experienced some erosion and pulled down some trees that had been growing near the edge of the bluffs. Those dead trees littered the beach below us destined to eventually rot apart and be pulled into the ocean as future driftwood. Still, they posessed a beauty of their own and Robin captured the beauty of those large drying trees resting on the sandy landscape at the foot of the cliffs. At the top of those cliffs stand the likely candidates for the next wave of erosion. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of trees line the bluffs appearing dried and brittle but holding on to whatever life they can pull from the sandy soil they are rooted into. The shape of their limbs suggests that the wind has sculpted their form so they stand frozen into place as if a strong wind was pushing their branches away from the sea. I chose to paint those trees and the hill they stand on. It was another great plein air painting day. Hu, my dog, came along. A fun serendipity happened on our drive home as we took A1A south and discovered that it was necessary to take a ferry to cross the water at one point near the Mayport Naval station.
