Description
I want to tell you about Carl. Carl was my music teacher. Yes, he taught me how to play the accordion, but, probably more important, he taught me music.
I probably think of something Carl taught me every day.
There is the music theory stuff, of course (by the way, is it REALLY a THEORY?)
But Carl also taught me about expression, feeling, finesse, and even presentation.
And, Carl was cool.
Carl was from Italy. He spoke with a thick Italian accent. He smoked Kool cigarettes and drank “coffee, regular.” (I know because he would often send me across Jerusalem Avenue to Larsen’s Deli to get them.)
He taught music at Bolognese School of Music around the corner from where I grew up in North Merrick.
Carl taught me for five years (or so) from about age 7 until I was 12. One half hour lesson every week.
Easily, Carl was one of the greatest teachers in my life.
And yet, I don’t know his last name, I never knew where he lived, I have no clue whether he was married or had children.
And, I never thanked him.
So, if you know Carl, tell him the big nerdy kid that used to get him coffee and cigarettes says, “Thank you.”
This painting was created digitally on Procreate using the oil brush and the dry brush.
