In Dunnellon, Florida, there is a river called The Rainbow River. It flows for 5.7 miles from the headwaters south to where it merges with the Withlacoochee River. The Rainbow River is fed by a number of "vents" or "springs" that push out between 400 - 600 million gallons of fresh water every day. The river is the centerpiece of the community. Locals swim in her waters, canoe on her surface, and picnic on her shores nearly all year long. I was one of those locals. I still am, but when I was younger I would float down that river at least once every summer in an inner tube. A beauty contest once crowned one young woman to be the "Queen Of The Rainbow." It wasn't just about physical beauty, it was also a symbolic position to protect the waters, the surrounding land, and the wildlife that call the area their home.
