Description
This is an oil painting created "plein air" style while standing in O'Leno State Park in North Florida. This was done on Saturday, March 3, 2012. I went to this location with Robin MacBlane and Doug Smith. Robin stood only thirty feet or so to my left as she also painted a beautiful rendering of this scene. Doug worked on his painting at a nearby picnic table which also was the location where I tethered Hu (my dog) so she could have plenty of shade. Inclement weather was threatened by the meteorologists and the entire time we were here there were a series of overcast moments with dark cloudy skies and then clear and sunny moments. No rain fell while we painted but there was plenty of isolated gusts of wind. One of those gusts of wind blew Robin's easel over just as she was nearly finished with her painting. It fell face first (paint side down) onto the ground and we both expected the worst. We thought the entire painting was going to be smeared from the fall. Instead, the painting fell on a short cypress knee. The knee tore a hole through Robin's canvas and it made us, at first, feel sick. Then Robin had an idea as to how she could repair the hole (which she has since done and it worked out beautifully). We realized later on that the cypress knee actually prevented the rest of the painting from hitting the ground and therefore prevented the smearing we had worried about. All in all it was another great plein air outting for Robin, Doug, Hu, and myself. Doug had a little incident of his own, by the way. While he was painting, a man approached Doug and asked him if he was Douglas Harvey (Harvey is Doug's middle name). Doug said, "Yes," and the man handed him his wallet which Doug has apparently dropped on the men's restroom floor earlier in the day. This is my 23rd "plein air" painting.
